“One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18–20, NLT)
Following Jesus is discipleship. To become more like Jesus you must follow Him and continue to follow Him. It is a life changing decision to leave where you came from to go where He is leading you.
Peter and his brother left all they had at the moment (and potentially their future livelihood and inheritance) to follow Jesus. They made the decision of discipleship not knowing a lot of things. They didn't stop Jesus and say, "What about our starting pay? Will we have a chance for promotion? Do we get paid holidays? How about medical insurance? 401K Plan? Let's negotiate our salary, could you email us an offer and we will get back to you in 48 hours?" the Bible says that they left their nets and followed Him at once. Jesus only promised them one thing, I will make you fishers of men.
When we begin to follow Jesus we really have no idea where we are going to ultimately end up (in this life on earth). We know that He promises us eternal life in the presence of God, but we follow Him because we trust that He knows where He is leading us.
I can only imagine what must have been going through Peter's mind when he heard Jesus say, "I will make you fishers of men." How strange. Even though Peter didn't have a clue as to what that statement must have meant he didn't object or question Jesus. That is huge! Following Jesus requires implicit trust.
You can't follow Jesus if you are going to demand to be in the driver's seat. Only Jesus knows the route that He has planned for you to go. And the way that we get where He wants us to go is to stay connected to His G.P.S. - God Positioning System.
Can you hear Jesus calling you to follow Him? He knows your name, your past, your desires and hopes, your weaknesses and shortcomings...and has a great plan for your future. In other words, YOU CAN TRUST HIM! He knows you and what is best for you. He knows where you need to be and how to get you there.
He is faithful and can be implicitly trusted...
Say this: I hear Jesus calling me to follow Him and be His disciple.
Pray this: "Lord, thank You for calling me to follow You. I am choosing today and everyday to leave my desires behind to take hold of what You have for me. I trust You implicitly. You are faithful."
