Parenting is a huge issue right now. We are witnessing the results of bad parenting on every level in our nation. When parents do not involve God in their household and in the lives of their children evil and rebellion are the consequences.
Parents, what are the priorities in your parenting?
Deuteronomy 6:5-6 - You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
The first priority for parenting is developing a passionate relationship with God yourself. As a parent you need to realize that your children are not only listening to you but they are watching you every minute of the day. They need to see you drawing near to God in prayer and study of the word of God. As they see you seeking first the kingdom of God they will naturally follow you with an open heart desirous to draw near to Him also.
You can't give what you don't have. Develop your passion for the Lord and they will follow you into His presence.
The second priority for parenting is to make the word of God your final authority and the foundation of your household. As the storms of life come against your family and home, you need a sure and solid foundation of the word of God to build upon. The word of God is the only thing that we have that is stable and unchanging in these tumultuous times. We must dig deep into the word of God and establish our every decision and action upon it. It is "the way" that your children should go. And when you instruct them in "the way" of the word, when they grow up they will not depart from it. (Hang on to that promise!)
The more that you teach your child the truth, the quicker they will recognize a lie.
Ask yourself this...
What I am doing today to establish these priorities in my family?
Would my children identify me as a passionate follower of Jesus that seeks first His kingdom and feeds on His word daily?
Have I just expected that my children will follow God on their own without any leadership or guidance on my part? If so, how can I change this?
