The theme of this 21 day season of prayer is a four word phrase from the prayer that the Lord used to teach His disciples about prayer in Luke chapter 11 - “His Will Be Done”
Jesus actually said as He was praying to His Father in Heaven - “YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN”
Let’s look at this passage in Luke chapter 11 that has been called the Lord’s prayer - that really should be called the disciples prayer (because we are the ones that the Lord was teaching when He spoke these words)
(Luke 11:1–4, NKJV) “Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”
The reason that Jesus used this model for prayer when teaching His disciples is because His disciples wanted to learn how to pray.
I believe that by following Jesus and observing His life they saw Him and heard Him pray. They saw the fruit of His prayers and even experienced the result of His prayers. They saw His results and wanted those same results as they prayed.
Since we are disciples of Jesus and we are following Him today, this should be our heart’s desire - to learn to pray like Jesus.
How did Jesus pray?
He prayed that the will of the Father be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus wanted His Father’s will to be done.
Jesus wanted to know the Father’s will and He wanted to do His Father’s will.
He even said this in John 6:38 - He said “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
Jesus realized that He had a will and that the Father had a will.
He wanted His Father’s will to be done in His life and He knew that the place of surrender was the place of prayer.
I believe that Jesus practiced the surrendering of His will to His Father daily in times of prayer.
This was ultimately manifested in the Garden of Gethsemane when He prayed - “Not my will but Your will be done”
This is a key to accomplishing God’s will for your life. Can we just practice this today?
Say this, “Father, not my will but Your will be done. We surrender to You and declare You Lord in our life today!”
