The Invention That Changed How We Communicate

The Invention That Changed How We Communicate

On June 23, 1868, Inventor Christopher Lathan Sholes received a patent for one of history’s most influential inventions… The typewriter.

Before the typewriter, most documents were written by hand, making business and communication much slower.  The typewriter transformed offices, journalism, education and eventually paved the way for modern computers.

Sholes’ invention dramatically increased the speed and efficiency of written  communication, helping businesses grow during America’s Industrial Revolution.

The typewriter also opened new career opportunities, especially for women, who increasingly entered the workforce as typists and office professionals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Even in our digital age, the familiar “QWERTY” keyboard layout found on computers, tablets and smartphones remains a lasting legacy of this remarkable invention.

History reminds us that simple innovations can have extraordinary impact – shaping the way generations communicate and connect with the world.
