The Reverence of the Lord: The Beginning of Wisdom

The Reverence of the Lord: The Beginning of Wisdom

Proverbs 9:10 “The reverential awe of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Almighty God results in good judgment.”

True wisdom does not begin with intelligence, education, experience or age. According to Scripture wisdom begins with the reverential respect of the Lord. Without this foundation, all other knowledge lacks proper direction and stability. A whole-hearted trust comes with this extreme trust in the Lord as well.

The reverential reverence of the Lord is often misunderstood. It’s not fear, terror or dread. It’s not a fear based emotion that is scared of punishment. Biblical reverential reverence is a deep, profound respect and awe for who God is and the acknowledgement of His authority. To have a reverential respect of the God is to take Him seriously, to honor His Word and to submit our lives to His Word of Truth.

Proverbs 1:7 says, “The reverential respect of the knowledge of the Lord is the beginning of
knowledge.”

Reverence for God affects how we live and it causes us to pause before we make decisions, To seek Him before we act and to obey even when we do not fully understand. The reverence of the Lord aligns our hearts with heaven and positions us to receive divine wisdom.

In building a life of faith, the reverential respect of the Lord is the foundation; wisdom becomes the structure and understanding provides stability. Without reverence for God, a life may appear strong, but it will not endure the challenges that come against it. May we treasure what God treasures and choose wisdom that begins with Him.

Building by His Wisdom,
Pastor Sheila
