Wisdom Makes Common Sense

Wisdom Makes Common Sense

Proverbs 3:21-26  “Don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment.  Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul….They are valuable and will keep you safe on your way and your feet will not stumble.  You can go to bed without fear and sleep soundly. You don’t have to be afraid of sudden disaster, for the Lord is your Security.  He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.”    NLT

With everything going on in the world today, our attention can easily be pulled away from the very thing that keeps us stable.

If we constantly feed on what is coming through media outlets, we can begin to react emotionally instead of responding wisely. Common sense, wisdom, and discernment refer to steady thinking that keeps a person from acting impulsively.

Common sense says:
  • Think before speaking or reacting
  • Consider the outcome
  • Don’t allow fear to drive your decisions

The Book of Proverbs repeatedly teaches us that rash decisions come from agitation, not wisdom. Fear and haste often work together. Common sense slows a person down long enough to remember what God has already said.  Wisdom, common sense, and discernment refresh our souls.

When we keep our thinking aligned with God’s truth, our soul, (our mind, will, and emotions)—remain steady even when circumstances are unstable.

The wise person remains calm in the middle of the storm or the battle because they understand that life-saving direction from the Commander can only be heard, received, and carried out when the heart and mind are settled.

Peace is not produced by perfect circumstances. Peace comes from a mind that remains anchored in Christ Jesus and His Word. When our thinking stays grounded in truth, fear loses its grip, our judgment remains clear, and our steps remain secure.

Wisdom Statement:

Wisdom keeps the mind steady so the house of life remains strong.
