Clara Barton and The American Red Cross

Clara Barton and The American Red Cross

On May 21, 1881, a remarkable woman named Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross.

Most people know the Red Cross as an organization that responds to disasters, helps during hurricanes, supports military families and organizes blood drives.  But many do not know the amazing story behind the woman who started it all.

Clara Barton was born in 1821 in Massachusetts and became know as the “Angel of the Battlefield” during the American Civil War.  While soldiers were wounded and dying on the front lines, Clara courageously brought comfort through food, medical supplies, and bandages into dangerous battle zones.  At a time when women rarely held leadership positions, she stepped into chaos with determination and passion.

After the war ended, Clara traveled to Europe where she learned about the International Red Cross, an organization dedicated to humanitarian aid during times of war and disaster.  She believed America needed the same kind of ministry of compassion.

So on this day, May 21, 1881, the American Red Cross was officially established.

Clara never married or had any children of her own, yet she became a “mother figure” to thousands through her service and sacrifice.  She spent her life helping people she didn’t even know.  She once said, “I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it.”  She was a courageous and tenacious woman.  History reminds us that ordinary people with extraordinary determination and discipline can leave a legacy and touch many generations.
