Kentucky, Helen Keller and Superman

Kentucky, Helen Keller and Superman

·      On June 1, 1792 Kentucky officially became the 15th state in the Union.  Once considered part of the western frontier, Kentucky was known for rugged wilderness, pioneer settlements, and explorers like Daniel Boone who helped open the region to early American settlers.  Kentucky was originally part of Virginia, but as the population grew rapidly after the Revolutionary War, the region became important enough to become it’s own state.

Abraham Lincoln was also born in KY, in a small log cabin in 1809.  Kentucky represented the adventurous, determined and pioneering spirit of early America, a land where people were willing to leave comfort behind and risk everything for the hope of building something new.  History is shaped by those willing to step into the unknown.

·      On June 1, 1904, Helen Keller became the first deaf-blind person to graduate from college when she earned her degree from Radcliffe College.  Despite her sight & hearing challenges Keller became an internationally respected author, speaker and symbol of perseverance and determination.

·      On June 1, 1938, Superman made his first appearance in Action Comics #1, becoming America’s very first major superhero.  Originally sold for just 10 cents, during the Great Depression, Superman quickly became a symbol of hope, courage, and justice for generations of Americans.
