The Golden Gate Bridge Opens To Public

At the time it was considered one of the greatest engineering achievements in the world.  Stretching across the entrance to San Francisco Bay, the bridge connected San Francisco to Marin County and transformed travel in Northern California forever.  Before the bridge existed people had to rely on ferries to cross the dangerous waters.  

Many experts considered this undertaking “impossible” due to the deep waters, strong currents, high winds, thick fog and constant threat of earthquakes. Yet engineers, designers and construction workers pressed forward anyway.  
 
The project of construction began during the Great Depression, giving jobs and hope to thousands of workers during one of America’s most difficult economic times.  When the bridge officially opened on May 26, 1937 nearly 200,000 people reportedly celebrated by walking across it on “Pedestrian Day” before vehicles were allowed to cross.  The next day on May 27, it opened to vehicular traffic.  
 
This amazing bridge represents:  Vision, determination, innovation, and the courage to attempt something that others thought could never be done.  

Sometimes history reminds us that the greatest accomplishments often begin when someone dares to step out and do things that others say is impossible…….  This sounds just like the heart of God to me.
