The Colony Built on Second Chances

The Colony Built on Second Chances

On June 9, 1732, King George II granted a royal charter to James Oglethorpe and a group of trustees, officially creating the Colony of Georgia, the last of the original thirteen colonies.

Oglethorpe was a soldier, statesman and reformer who envisioned Georgia as a place of opportunity and new beginnings.  He hoped the colony would provide a fresh start to struggling citizens while also serving as a protective buffer between South Carolina and Spanish Florida.

When Oglethorpe arrived in 1733, he established Savannah.  Georgia’s early success was also aided by Oglethorpe’s friendship with Tomochichi, whose cooperation helped foster peaceful relations during the colony’s early years.

What began as a bold vision on the edge of the frontier would eventually become one of America’s most important states.

Sometimes history begins with a simple idea: giving people a chance to build something better.
