America’s Most Sacred Ground

America’s Most Sacred Ground

On June 15, 1864, during the height of the Civil War, the United states officially established Arlington National Cemetery on the former estate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s family.

As the war raged and causalities mounted, existing cemeteries around Washington D.C., were rapidly running out of space.  What began as a practical necessity soon became on of the most honored and revered places in America.

Today, Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 400,000 service members, veterans, and their families.  It’s rolling hills, rows of white headstones and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stand as enduring reminders of the price of freedom and the sacrifices made by generations of Americans.

As we remember those who served, may we never take for granted the liberties secured by their courage and sacrifice.  We honor their memory.  We cherish their sacrifice.  We remain grateful for their service.

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down’s one’s life for his friends.”  John 15:13
