Courage at Bunker Hill

Courage at Bunker Hill

On June 17, 1775, one of the earliest and most important battles of the American Revolution took place near Boston – The Battle of Bunker Hill.

Although the British ultimately captured the hill, the battle came at a tremendous cost.  The American colonists, many of whom were farmers, tradesmen and ordinary citizens, stood their ground against one of the most powerful armies in the world.

The Battle is remembered for the famous command:  “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.”   With limited ammunition, the colonists were instructed to hold their fire until the British soldiers were close enough to ensure every shot counted.

The British suffered more than 1000 casualities, shocking military leaders and proving that the colonists would not surrender their fight for liberty without a determined struggle.

The battle became a symbol of courage, sacrifice and perseverance.  It demonstrated that victory is not always measured by who hold the ground at the end of the day, but by the courage to stand firm when the odds seem overwhelming.

History reminds us that great achievements often begin with ordinary people willing to do extraordinary things.  Freedom has a price and courage pays part of it.

“Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9
